It is a type of chalcedony, a variant of quartz, and is composed primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO₂). Pietersite is found primarily in Namibia and China, making it quite rare and sought after. It is usually not transparent and has a specific gravity of between 2.60 and 2.90.
