How you can use runes
Runes are ancient Nordic symbols that we used in Scandinavia as early as the Bronze Age.
Feh (Wealth) – Symbol of the flow of life and material and spiritual gifts. Reminds that wealth is something to be shared and circulated, not something to hold onto.
Ur (Strength) – The primordial power of the Earth, raw life energy and endurance. The ability to stand firm in the face of adversity and to shape one's own path.
Thurs (Thorn) – Challenges, obstacles and raw power. Teaches us to be tested, to face both inner and outer shadows and grow through resistance.
Ass (God, Odin) – The voice of the Spirit, wisdom and communication. Represents inspiration, sacred words and the connection between the divine and man.
Reid (Journey) – The path of life, both physical and inner. The teaching that the journey itself is sacred, and that each step leads to development.
Ken (Lantern) – Inner light, clarity and enlightenment. The spark that reveals the path and burns away ignorance.
Gifu (Gift) – Exchange, love and balance. Symbol of relationships where giving and receiving occur in harmony.
Wynja (Joy) – The pure joy of being in life. Harmony, community and inner peace.
Hagal (Hail) – Chaos and trial. The unpredictability of nature, but also the potential for transformation when the storm has passed.
Need – Limitation that drives creativity. Reminder that need can be a teacher and open to inner strength.
Iss (Ice) – Still, frozen state. A time for rest, introspection, and clarity before movement returns.
Jara (Year/Harvest) – The rune of cycles. Reminds us of the passage of time, that everything has its season, and that the harvest follows work.
Eoh (Idegran) – Death and eternity. A rune for deep transformation, protection and contact with the immortal within us.
Perta (Mother, Earth) – Mysticism, the hidden and the source of life. The connection to the primal mother, birth and secrets yet to be revealed.
Algiz (Moose) – Protection, spiritual contact and intuition. Rune to raise one's inner protection and be in tune with higher powers.
Sunna/Sol (The Sun) – Life, vitality and enlightenment. The light that dispels darkness and brings clarity and warmth into life.
Tyr (Spiritual Warrior, Heaven) – Courage, sacrifice, and justice. A rune for standing up for truth and higher principles.
Bjarka (Healing Power) – Vegetation, motherhood and healing. Rune for recovery, growth and nurturing energy.
Eh (Horse) – Cooperation, movement and powerful forward drive. Rune for relationships and travel, both internal and external.
Madr (Human) – Self-knowledge and community. Symbol of our development in relation to others, and that humanity carries both strength and fragility.
Lagu (Water) – The depth of emotions and intuition. The water rune for flow, dreams and the subconscious world.
Ing (God Ing, male sexuality) – Fertility, creative power and inner fire. A rune for creativity and fulfillment.
Dagaz (Day, insight) – Awakening, breakthrough and new beginning. Symbol of clarity, balance between light and darkness, and enlightenment of consciousness.
Odal (Home, tradition) – Ancestral heritage, roots and sacred place. A rune for understanding where we come from and finding security in our origins.
The best way to learn how to use runes is to study the history and meaning of the different runes, and then practice writing them in the correct order and direction. Here are some tips for using runes:
- Learn about the different runes and their meanings. There are different runic alphabets, but the most famous is the Elder Futhark, which consists of 24 runes. Each rune has a name and a meaning, and these meanings can be used to form words and sentences.
- Practice writing the runes. Start by writing each rune individually, making sure to follow the order and direction. It is important to get the basics right before attempting to write words or sentences.
- Practice reading runes. Once you feel comfortable writing the runes, try reading them. There are various resources available, such as books or online guides, that can help you learn to read runes.
- Use runes in everyday life. Once you feel comfortable with the basics of using runes, you can start using them in your everyday life. For example, you can use runes for divination, writing notes or messages, or even creating decorative objects like jewelry or artwork.
